Chairman & Chief Technology Officer
Dr. Greg Baiden


Dr. Greg Baiden is a Professor in Laurentian University's School of Engineering and held a Canadian Research Chair in Robotics and Automation. He also serves as Chairman and Chief Technology Officer of Penguin Automated Systems Inc., a company formed to commercialize the technology developed under his leadership and provide consulting services to a variety of clients.

Dr. Baiden received his Bachelors and Masters degrees in Mining Engineering at Queen's University, and his Doctorate at McGill University in Montreal.  Prior to joining Laurentian, he worked for Inco Limited within the Mines Research Division and served as President of Automated Mining Systems Limited.  From 1995 to 2001, he served as the head of Inco's Mines Research, where he was responsible for delivering new technologies and products to the mine environment.

In 2001, Dr. Baiden left Inco as Manager of Mines Research to join Laurentian University as a professor and researcher within the School of Engineering.  He has taught both undergraduate and graduate courses and continues to supervise graduate students.

Dr. Baiden's research has targeted the remote control of multiple robots and remote machines for several diverse applications ranging from space to underground mining. He has earned international recognition for his work in Telerobotics and Mine Automation.


President:-Paul Semple Paul Semple brings to the company 20 years of international mine design and project development experience. Prior to co-founding Penguin ASI, he was Vice-President of Global Marketing for SNC Lavalin. In this position, he was responsible for project marketing, team building, project costing and execution with the mining and metallurgy sector. In addition to these responsibilities, Paul was General Manager of SNC Lavalin’s Toronto Mining Office; where he was responsible for all mining engineering project activities.

Vice-President, Business Development
Steven Cass
Steven Cass is a business lawyer with substantial experience in structuring and negotiating international transactions, including joint ventures and licensing arrangements. Steven obtained a post-graduate degree in law from Cambridge University and has previously taught international sales in the Faculty of Law at the University of Toronto. His responsibilities include all legal aspects of Penguin ASI affairs; he is also directly involved in strategic alliances and client initiatives.

Dr. Yassiah Bissiri
Vice- Chair of Research & Senior Operations Specialist Dr. Yassiah Bissiri
Dr. Yassiah Bissiri is the Vice-Chair of Research and the Senior Operations Specialist at Penguin ASI. Along with his roles at Penguin ASI, he is also a Research Associate at Laurentian University where he teaches Machine Maintenance and Reliability along with Automation Engineering Dynamics.

Dr. Bissiri holds Mathematics and Physics Degrees from West Africa as well as a Masters and PhD in Applied Science from the University of British Columbia. His research interests and specialities include but are not limited to: Operations Research to Complex Engineering Problems, Mathematical Modeling, Innovation & Automation, Intelligent Systems and Machine Maintenance & Reliability.
